Range anxiety for drivers who want to do more than toodle around town in their new EVs has long been forecast as a deterrent to longevity for the potentially huge electric car market.
If IBM has its way, and succeeds in the process, EVs will easily be able to meet the superhighway challenge within a decade, thanks to development of a rechargeable battery that can hold its charge for up to 500 miles. The battery is projected to go on the market ~2020.
Current EV batteries are perfectly suitable for short distance commuting. Some are able to go about 100 miles without a recharge. Those in vehicles that shift to hybrid electric-gas mode when the battery charge expires last for a shorter distance, but have the safety net of gasoline backup, if needed.
